As Christ followers we should not only enter the conversation of racial reconciliation, we should lead it. The first step is understanding the issues. This week’s topic is Conscious Versus Unconscious Bias. Here’s the video:
Conscious bias is overt prejudice for or against a group of people. We embrace or deny or try to control our conscious biases. Unconscious bias leads us to categorize individual or group based on past knowledge and/or experience. Unconscious biases are deep rooted and require Holy Spirit led examination to reveal them.
“Search me, O God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in my that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
How do we identify conscious and unconscious bias in ourselves and in the church?
Where do those biases originate?
What steps could we take to examine ourselves as individuals as well as a community of faith?
Read 1 John 2:9-11 and 1 Samuel 16:1-7. What does God have to say on the subject of bias?
